About Mr. Hans Vijlbrief
Education
1981-1987 Economics at the Free University of Amsterdam (cum laude); masters thesis concerned household savings in the Netherlands.
1987-1992 PhD research at the Free University of Amsterdam and the Tinbergen Institute. Subject of thesis: The influence of unemployment benefits on the labour market in the Netherlands.
Work experience
October 1992 - January 1995: Economist at the Directorate for Economic Policy, Department of the Ministry of Economic Affairs in the Netherlands.
January 1995 - December 1999: Head of the unit General Economic and Labour Market Policy at the Directorate for Economic Policy.
1997 - November 1999: at the same time deputy director at the Directorate for Economic Policy.
January 1998-January 2000: Director (part-time) of the Research Center for Economic Policy. Several ministries and the Erasmus University corporate in Ocfeb with the aim to conduct research relevant for economic policy.
December 1999 - December 2000: deputy director of the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis.
June 2000 professor 'Economic Policy' at the Free University of Amsterdam.
January 2001: Director of the Directorate for Economic Policy of the Department of the Ministry of Economic Affairs in the Netherlands. The Directorate works in close contact with the Minister and the secretary of state, preparing political debates, speeches and also functions as the strategic unit of the ministry. In this capacity member of the Central Economic Commission (the most important advisory commission of the Cabinet on economic issues), the Studygroup on the Budgetary Margins, the Economic Policy Committee of the European Union and member of the governing council of the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
July 2004: Director-General Economic Policy, responsible for macroeconomic policy, European affairs and competition policy.
February 15th 2010 Director-General Energy, Telecom and markets.
